Jul 18, 2004 The T5 and T6 refer to heat treatments applied to the aluminum. You might compare your bend radius to your material thickness to avoid cracking - as a rule of thumb, your bend radius should be equal to or greater than your material thckness. As to material for this wheel project, either 3003 or 6061 would work well.

Turn back the O2 and set your rosebud tip to an ordinary flame. Heat the part uniformly until the black soot goes away. This should anneal the 6061-T6 (or other “T”) into a T-0 material. One is steel, 24 gauge, and the other is aluminum, .050. The aluminum actually cost more than the steel which surprised me. Neither were very expensive, though.

So far, I have used this bender to make circles out of 1x1/16 aluminum for some of my hobby robots, to bend some 1x1/8 inch aluminum into a perfect circle for a US First Robotics high school team I mentor (Go Team 1631), and to bend two 5 inch wide 1/8 inch steel sheets 9 feet long for a fire pit I am making (but that's another instructable).

Dec 28, 2012 I need to bend some 3/8" round bar in 8" circles and weld together. I have no clue and no tools to do that so what are some suggestions to accomplish this? I just ordered a compact bender from HF just because I've always wanted to get it. I don't think this will bend a perfect circle, maybe if I take my time, but I need to bend several of these so I'm looking for

It can also take a little bit of practice to get the right size of radius and to mark out where the bends should start and stop. This is especially true if you're trying to do something really precise.

Try bending a test piece first. Aluminum is a bit of a tricky beast when it comes to bending. It will harden simply through age (the "T" number on aluminum is a hardness rating, done through chemical aging). I work at a fabrication shop and we frequently make handrails out of 6063.

Jul 06, 2016 I want to bend some L-shaped aluminium angle ie. flooring/door profile/strip, nothing heavy just some diy store, off the shelf stuff and am wondering if it can be done maybe with a propane torch to heat it while in a vice. Its such a small job i dont want to have to bring it to a metal shop and pay 50 smackers to get it done.

Anyways, yea, if you bend aluminium too far it will fatigue, crack and snap. Usually once your getting to 90 degrees or so (depends greatly on the thickness of the bar) If you heat it and keep it warm/hot while bending it'll reduce the fatigue issue massively.
