Cylinder Block Lifetime WarrantyStitching Pin Selection • Most aluminum cyl heads have fairly thin walls so you should use L4 pins that have very fine threads. • The fine threads also work well when tapping into the hard seat insert. • L4 pins will fit in between the seats in most cases. • Larger diameter pins are used when the casting is thicker.

This is especially critical when mounting an aluminum head to an aluminum engine block given the high expansion rate of aluminum, which is much higher than that of steel. For this reason, be very cautious of repairs that use anything other than a solid thread repair along with factory head bolts or high quality studs such as ARP®.

Sep 27, 2011 I was in the process of installing front tip-over bars today on my old Concours. I've had these bars laying around since January. As I was tightening the bottom left mounting bracket (the bolt goes into the radiator mounting bracket), with the torque wrench set at 35 ft-lbs (instructions for tip over bars say 30-40), of course, the aluminum engine block threads got

Depends on the place the crack occurs....if the crack is in a non-load bearing area that doesn't cause mis-alignment of bearing and close-tolerance flat (ie; gasketed or interference fit) surfaces, then the repair can be done. Jun 22, 2016 In fact, a Keensert may have an outer thread with an entirely different thread pitch than the inner. Unlike thread-repair inserts that require S.T.I. taps, Keenserts utilize standard taps that are two steps larger than the original threaded hole. This means that an M14x1.5 tap would be used for a M10x1.25 thread repair insert.
Dec 28, 2021 threads strip out of the block on some BMW M52TU and M54 engines. Typically, this occurs during the repair of an engine that has been overheated. The cause of the problem is due to an overheat condition that has weakened the structure of the aluminum block assembly in the area of the bolt threads.
Dec 23, 2018 Great Deal @ $75! Standard block, forged crank, good rods, 1.94's. That was a hot running engine at one time. Good fortune to find a 327 block that's still standard. Run all the block, head #'s. The right stuff, might be worth some bucks to a muscle car restorer.

Feb 18, 2011 This expansion along with the locktite and shoulder at the surface make for a better than new repair. The GM Northstar engines were failures right out of the factory. Head bolts were pulling the threads right out of the aluminum block. The factory field fix was to have the techs install timeserts for all the head bolts.
Sep 09, 2021 Sounds like what I did with my 1990 GMC SBC 350 motor. I used 1970-71 LT1 heads with the later 1990 block. I also had an engine that was machined for a mechanical fuel pump, so bought the rod and plate, and converted it to the mechanical pump. I went with a Howards roller cam, and lifters with the earlier heads.

Feb 28, 2007 The '65 L79 intake ends in 461 and I believe the '66/'67 version ends in 490 so either way it sounds quite a ways off. The '70 Z/28 intake is basically the same but I don't recall it if got a different casting number or not. Is it aluminum (65-67) or cast iron (68)? Anything in the 200-250a range shouldn't require preheating. Engine blocks are big chunks of aluminum, but the majority of it is pretty thin (relatively). 1 - 20 of 59 Posts. 1.
May 25, 2015 As the title suggests, my engine build has come to a screeching halt when the very last head bolt yanked the threads out of the block. Vehicle is a 2004 Honda Odyssey with 3.5L V6, all aluminum. The torque sequence on this cylinder head is 23-51-73 -- start at the lower value, torque each bolt twice, then move to the next, etc..
Dec 23, 2002 RE: Threads in 6061 2024 Aluminum. rickp (Mechanical) 18 Dec 02 13:30. We routinely tap 6061-T6 and 2024-T3 or T4, and 7075-T6. They have reasonable strength and are hard enough to tap cleanly. There are formulas for determining the tread depth so the tapped thread has strength equal to the machine screw used in it.
Aluminum is used in machinery because of its light weight and low cost. Unfortunately, aluminum bolt holes are notoriously soft and easy to strip. You can fix a stripped aluminum bolt hole with a double-threaded insert that will allow you to reuse the original bolt.
I installed exhaust manifolds on six cylinder Camry and Avalon engines at the Georgetown Toyota factory. Sometimes the nut would cross thread on the stud and the stud would turn and strip out the hole. The block was aluminum and we were always told there might be one good tap possible with an aluminum block.
Creating a permanent repair on damaged aluminum generally requires welding. Welding aluminum is a task best left to the professionals. If you do know how to weld aluminum, the equipment is expensive to rent and not cost-effective for small repairs. Repairing aluminum with epoxy is cost-effective and easy. You need to ...
