1. The blue Bernzomatic will work just fine but I prefer using the yellow premium touch as it's hotter and works much quicker.2. You'll also need some aluminum brazing rods. I purchased all of these things at Home Depot.3. What I like about using aluminum is it's soft enough to cut with ordinary woodworking saw blades.4. I'll then chamfer the edges to allow a channel for the brazing material.5. Before brazing it's very important that the aluminum is clean.6. Clamp up the tubing and start heating the aluminum with a propane torch. Aluminum will start to melt at 1200deg Fahrenheit but the brazing rod w...7. Rub the brazing rod along the channel until it's filled in and finish it off with some more heat. The main difficult is that you cannot simply weld an engine block since it is made from cast iron, not steel. It is possible to weld cast iron using an arc welder and the proper welding rods, but that often can cause deformation to your engine block, or leave the welded area far more brittle and susceptible to further cracking.
2.3 Aluminum/Magnesium Alloys – 5xxx Series. The aluminum/magnesium alloys (5xxx series) have the highest strengths of the non-heat-treatable aluminum alloys and, for this reason, are very important for structural applications. Magnesium (0.5 to 3.0 percent) in an aluminum weld produces a crack-sensitive weld metal composition.

Jan 05, 2012 Flame spray welding can create a strong and long-lasting repair the same as furnace welding but without as much heat. The head still has to be preheated and postheated, but not as much nor as long. Spray welding needs about 1,000 to 1,400 degrees F of preheat. Only the weld area gets hot so there is little risk of distortion.
