Welding aluminum is not as hard as you think. Turns out you can weld aluminum without a welder! This instructable will teach you how to use a propane torch and some aluminum brazing rods as a quick way to bond aluminum without using a welder. It makes for a very strong bond and with a little practice can be done quickly with great looking results.
For a proper high-temperature, you can use special aluminum-brazing rods like 4047 (88% aluminum and 12% silicon) that melts in a narrow 10 degree temperature range (1070-1080 F). In comparison, two common aluminum rods/wires used for TIG/MIG are: 4043 - (94% alum and 6% silicon) that melts from 1065 to 1170 F.

The welding rods worked much as expected from watching the video. As suggested I believe the result was better by not having the flame directly on the area to be joined. Very happy with the result. Regards, Conrad. 5 Aluminium Repair Rods ( Ultra Bond )
MIG welding vs flux core welding, two different techniques for joining two metals. MIG is a more advanced form of welding that uses a wire to create the weld, while flux core is also an arc type but instead uses a metal rod as its filler material. This article will discuss the pros and cons

Feb 09, 2010 02-09-2010, 01:03 AM. Any input on this rod for welding aluminum I was told you can use a propane torch or O/A to weld with this rod. got a aluminum water tank and it's not important that it hold high pressure. or that the weld even looks good just needs to fix the seapage it has under about 10 psi was told this rod will work as good as tigging it.
Mar 29, 2014 It is a cast aluminum and I have tried several solders with a propane torch with no luck, I even tried 2 different tig rods. Can I do it with the propane torch or do I need oxy/atc? What filler? I can get aluminum stick welding rod but don't have a stick welder. I think I have a spool of aluminum wire also but no spool gun or straight Argon.
Feb 20, 2013 They are Zinc based rods that melt at 700* instead of 1200 for Al. I got some from True Value, marketed as Oxy-Acetylene Aluminum Welding rods. I'd hoped they'd be better than the Alumiweld and Duraweld stuff everyone hates. They're not. They don't stick to anything. They melt, ball up into spheres, and roll off whatever you were trying to repair.
