I get requests for this engine all the time. YES, it is a very cool engine! It has the LS6, 799 heads and increased compression to 10.1:1. BUT it is also a VERY limited production engine. Apr 27, 2016 Vortec series iron-block late-model truck engines (1999 and newer) are also LS based motors. They use different engine codes, but they are part of the family. Engine codes for these motors look like this; LM7, LM4, L59, LQ9, and so on. LS engines can have an aluminum or an iron block. LS engines are ALL considered small blocks.
These LS blocks and rotating parts are built "hell for stout" and have been beat on and beat on for the last few years with these big power levels. The "better" and more "modern" mechanical design is what allows this. Then with the Ford addition to the engine, making big power is so much easier and less expensive.

The two main advantages a Camaro/ Firebird/ Corvette LS1 have over a truck 5.3 for example are that the aluminum block weighs 65lbs less and they usually make around 10 horsepower more.
