Jul 24, 2004 And don't have the block bored until you have the new pistons on hand so correct fit can be assured. Align boring the mains may buy peace of mind but may not be necessary. Just set the crank in place with fresh bearings clearanced at 0.002-0.003 inch, omitting the oil seals, and spin the crank. If it coasts, the block and crank are okay.
Jan 29, 2020 Remember cfm is only concerned with bore, stroke, number of cylinders, and rpm's. Nothing else affects cfm. total cfm = (rpm) (CID) divided by 3456 For an example I'll assume the max rpm you'll turn this is 3800. Your engine will have 276 cubes. Then: cfm = (3800) (276) divided by 3456 = 303 cfm.

At 5,000 rpm, and in 0.003 second, the amount of cooling is limited. But now look at that same engine while idling at 500 rpm. That (cold) 200°F water flowing through the block and heads now has ten times as long to cool everything as the piston descends. In ten times as long, the gases inside the cylinder can get really cooled off.

But a normally aspirated 540ci big-block Chevy with a 4.50-inch bore would require a larger 0.018-inch top-ring ...
