They're ribbed for added strength and have a large water capacity and excellent breathing characteristics. Compression ratio is 8.0:1 on blocks with a 3/16"" base relief (stock bore and stroke).

Machining a water jacket around the original exhaust porting sounds impossible to me, but I'm not a machinest. You have passages that amount to the same thing as a block-hugger header INSIDE the water passages in a flathead.
