Apr 05, 2017 An Aluminum skid will hold up to quite a bit of abuse, but it's service life in the rocks will be much shorter than a steel skid. If your primary goal is Forest Service roads with the occasional trip excursion, you'll be fine with aluminum. I was surprised by how many KOH cars run Aluminum backed HDPE skid plates.

Steel is stronger and won't gouge like alum but if you're not going crazy rock crawling you should be fine. I've only got a TRD Pro alum skid and have whacked it several times and besides scratches it's still ok.
User Interaction Count: 7Sep 15, 2020 Btw most skid manufacturers use 5052 aluminum because it's easy to weld, not heat treated and bends nicely without cracking. The problem is it bends easy, doesn't slide very well and gouges. Even if you welded gussets all along a piece of 1/4 5052 it still wouldn't be as strong as 1/4 steel with no gussets.
I went with some 3/16" alu, some steel skid plates but haven't really put them to use yet. Aluminum is fine to protect against flying rocks. Steel is superior if the vehicle hits one that is immovable. You almost make it sound as if Overkill is a bad thing.

Dec 15, 2017 Also keep in mind that steel generally bends past the point where aluminum might crack, and steel is easier to bend back into shape and retain strength whereas aluminum weakens significantly more where it bends. I debated this for a while before buying steel skid underbelly plates for my 2012 JKU.
Aug 17, 2017 It's crazy to lug around all the extra weight of steel for the occasional rock encounter. The aluminum is more than strong enough to cope with that and literally a 1/4 the weight. As for hybrid, I'd actually do the opposite- steel IFS skid and aluminum mid bodies. Your far more likely to hit rocks on approach than mid centered.
Sep 15, 2020 Let's talk about steel versus aluminum skid plates! We have run steel Shrockworks Nissan Xterra skid plates for over 10 years. We have run aluminum Pelfreybilt Toyota Tacoma skid plates for years. As we have wheeled our 2017 Overland Toyota Tacoma Off Road on more difficult 4x4 trails, we have found the limits of the aluminum skid plates.

Aug 21, 2012 Built to the same strength, all things being equal, with aluminum's modulus of elasticity at about 30% of steel you're going to be significantly more expensive with aluminum skids than steel. And if built to the same relative strength perimeter the weight savings in this application is going to be marginal IMO. My front skid on my 100 is aluminum.

Apr 05, 2016 According to the folks at Rock Hard you can mix their steel aluminum skids. Maybe run aluminum on the oil pan skid steel on the transfer case skid and or gas tank skid. In my JKU I tend to hit the transfer case skid more than the oil pan. Just an option that wasn't suggested yet. Not sure about other brands of skid plates though.
Oct 04, 2017 Hey @Ali M, as far as skid plate facts goes between ARB and BudBuilt, ARB are 3mm thick or .118” which is a little thinner than BudBuilt's “Lite” steel of 1/8” or .125” thick.But then Bud has 3/16” steel and stainless steel (4.7625mm) and 1/4” aluminum (6.35mm). He also does 1/4” steel for the rock bouncer crowd if needed.
