Apr 16, 2006 Ive seen the aluminum blocks live with almost 30 psi and 1300 hp. Run all season long running 8.20's @170mph and that same motor is still living strong with another turbo behind it when it was swapped into his daily driver Silverado. Im running an Iron block now and when it comes time to refresh it im going back to a Aluminum block.
Feb 18, 2011 The 5.3/4.8 weigh more then the LS1. I can personally vouch for this cause Ive had to pick up both of them (not by myself of course). Also after I dropped the LS1 in my truck, the front end raised up about 3/4" . Iron block = heavy pig Alum. Block= light pig

Another engine variant, the L33, shares the same displacement, but has an aluminum block with cast in cylinder liners, much like the LS1. LM7. The Vortec 5300 LM7 (VIN code 8th digit "T") was introduced in 1999. It has a cast-iron block and aluminum heads and can be considered the "garden variety" version of the Generation III V-8s.
