Mar 26, 2007 The L79 camshaft itself became so popular that from 1965 through 1980, more 1957-1974 stock Chevy V-8 small-blocks were owner-fitted with the L79 factory # 3863151 camshaft than any other grind.
Topped with an aluminum high rise intake and a 750 CFM Holley carburetor, the 350 factory horsepower rated L79 engine made 346 HP @ 5,400 RPM and 383 lbs/ft of torque @ 3,900 RPM. While these numbers are impressive and in line with the factory HP rating, it is most likely more power than any factory L79 engine put out.

ZI = 327 c.i., 350 horse power, L79 with manual trans. 145222 = last 6 digits of the vin / vin sequence production number. 362 = cast on the sides of the block underneath, these are the last 3 numbers of the block casting number which is on the driver side facing up on the rear of the engine. That number is 3791362 cast into the back of the block.

L79's did not come with HD cooling unless they also had AC although it could be ordered. Funny because my 68 L79 has a cast intake but an aluminum T housing or the exact opposite. Bill

Also, there were many more 65 Chevelles with this engine than in 66 (because big blocks were available). The essentially same engine was available in 68 Corvettes rated at 325 hp.

I feel this is a bonus as I feel an engine needs to slowly warm up especially aluminum head iron block..something in my mind thinks there would be less head gasked scrubbing in a deal like that.

There are several good additives made to lower temps and protect engines when there are different metals in the engine coolant loop!There are some specialized coolants you run straight that are made for industrial applications that are great.

Added new fluids, burped the system and drove the car. Driver side ok. . . . .but passenger side (as per the pic) was still leaking so I parked the car and it has been sitting since.
