Feb 23, 2019 8RT HEADS. 8RT – The 8RT was a low compression Truck head. Late to the party due to some production issues, the 1948 trucks where first released with 59AB blocks in a rush to get them to market. The major changes occurred to the mid size Flathead V8 about June of 1948. It was strictly used in the new Ford F-1 through F-8 trucks of that year.
A flathead with a 1946 block powered Ron Main's Flat fire to a new land speed record for its class at 302.674 mph. The world's quickest flathead dragster, Ron Schnell's Slider, has run the quarter in 7.695 seconds; it's blown flattie dyno'd at 939 hp on a 60-percent nitro load.

The V8-60 has a gear type oil pump driven off the crank timing gear. The V8-60's heads use 17 studs, not the 21 studs of the larger V8. For this year only, the little V8 has sheet metal sides on the block. The V8-85 gets a larger, relocated water pump, larger insert main bearings, and new cast alloy-steel domed pistons.

Mar 16, 2018 The V12 was only 292 cu in, not a lot bigger than a 255 Merc. And there is a lot more speed equipment available for the Ford and Merc. Of course any OHV V8 has it over the Lincoln, Ford, or Merc flathead. Short answer - not worth the bother unless you want to spend a lot of money for a novelty that does not make a lot of HP or torque.

May 17, 2013 In those days all V8 blocks were cast in 3 pieces, 2 - 4 cylinder cylinder blocks bolted to an aluminum crankcase, motorcycle style. The 1 piece V8 block was a very complex casting, harder to make than a straight six or straight eight.
A few years ago, Kirby got in early on a remarkable stash of new and used, carefully maintained flathead engines from France. Commissioned by the French military for four-wheel-drive vehicles, these blocks were improved in many ways, with front sections that resembled pre-'49 flatheads and rear sections, and detachable bellhousings like post-'48 Ford 8BAs or Mercury 8CMs.
