Jan 30, 2015 I just bought a big-block 454 engine from a friend and I want to put it in my '69 Camaro with a 4-speed trans. The engine was rebuilt a long time ago with 10.5:1 forged pistons and rectangle port iron heads. The engine has an older, solid lifter cam it in but my friend couldn't remember the specs. Apr 04, 2019 Actually an aluminum head AND block helps eliminate head gasket problems seen with aluminum heads on a cast iron block. The reverse is true too. Cast iron heads on an aluminum block were problematic as well. Gasket technology has improved as well. But to the original question, there is nothing to fear about a modern day aluminum engine block.

Aluminum heads heat up a lot easier and quicker compared with an iron head which reduces the risk of detonation or pre-ignition. You can repair aluminum heads easier, but I don't want a repaired head on my car, that's just me.
