In the case of the small-block Chevy, the head bolt is 7/16-inch with 14 threads per inch. So this will require the Heli-Coil kit PN5521-7. Cracks in an aluminum head or block, on the other hand, are much more difficult to repair by pinning because aluminum is a softer metal than cast iron so the pins and plugs can't achieve as much “bite” as they do in an iron casting.
May 25, 2015 As the title suggests, my engine build has come to a screeching halt when the very last head bolt yanked the threads out of the block. Vehicle is a 2004 Honda Odyssey with 3.5L V6, all aluminum. The torque sequence on this cylinder head is 23-51-73 -- start at the lower value, torque each bolt twice, then move to the next, etc..
Stitching Pin Selection • Most aluminum cyl heads have fairly thin walls so you should use L4 pins that have very fine threads. • The fine threads also work well when tapping into the hard seat insert. • L4 pins will fit in between the seats in most cases. • Larger diameter pins are used when the casting is thicker.

Mar 18, 2018 Also if it's the head and not the block then you can always swap heads as a last resort or take the head to a good machine shop and they'll fix it for $150 or less. If a chunk came out of the block you or a machine shop can essentially make a plug that threads into the block. Drill and tap the block to accept a large diameter thread.

The head bolt pulled threads and I had thought about ever possible solution for the fix. I looked at videos. I looked at reviews. I was going to do a time Sert and glad a found this much better product worked like it said. The coarser thread definitely will hold much better in a aluminum block or whatever.
I bought some ARP head studs, which didn't quite fit. I don't have a thread micrometer, so I can't say exactly how oversized they were, but I wasn't going to get them in without a breaker bar (even then it's a maybe). So I took a little off with a die and then installed the studs with a little oil. The block is aluminum.

Sep 05, 2006 Thanks for all the replies. The engine isn't a northstar, it's 4.9. Has an aluminum block and iron 16v heads. I doubt it it would get into the waterjacket, they seem pretty thick and the helicoils or whatnot don't drill it out that much. I'll point him to this thread and go from there.

Jan 08, 2008 By oiling the threads, the reading on the torque wrench will be incorrect.In other word you would have over torqued the bolts. looking at my pocket ref: 5/16-18 bolt,raw steel, no lube, 29 foot pounds torque. SAE 40 wt oil, 17 foot pounds (41%). Now your best option for repair is to helicoil the striped holes.
