We get a lot of calls from people who go to put their cylinder head(s) back on the engine (aluminum block) and the threads strip while trying to torque the head bolts. Let's talk about the different threads first.

As I was tightening the bottom left mounting bracket (the bolt goes into the radiator mounting bracket), with the torque wrench set at 35 ft-lbs (instructions for tip over bars say 30-40), of course, the aluminum engine block threads got
Step 2. Align the tap attached to the tap handle over the cross threaded or stripped hole. For right hand screws, insert tap into tap hole as you slowly rotate the tap handle clockwise. 99 percent of of holes, screws, and bolts are right hand screws. If you know your hole is a left hand thread, rotate counterclockwise instead of clockwise. Edit.

Oct 25, 2013 I think I'm going to tap it out to 7/16"-14. Major thread diameter for 3/8"-16 is .375". Tap drill size for 7/16"-14 is .406", so I'm only drilling out .030", realistically less than that because the hole is already larger from being stripped. Major diameter is .4375, so I'm really only increasing hole diameter by 1/16".

Sep 13, 2019 my issue is that the engine is to use ARP main cap studs which are to be torqued to 90ft/lb. one particular hole just continues to strip out before reaching the finish torque. first it stripped the aluminum threads in the block, then it stripped the helicoil, then pulled the BIGSERT out from the outside aluminum threads.

Nov 19, 2015 Once the drilling is done you would probably be able to go in with a small awl and pick the threads out. At worst you may have to use a Heli-coil to repair it. I had a '62 Buick Special with a 215 Aluminum V8 and had to do this a few times. Just be sure you are drilling perpendicular to the mounting flange when you do it.

Vehicle is a 2004 Honda Odyssey with 3.5L V6, all aluminum. The torque sequence on this cylinder head is 23-51-73 -- start at the lower value, torque each bolt twice, then move to the next, etc..
