Sep 27, 2011 I was in the process of installing front tip-over bars today on my old Concours. I've had these bars laying around since January. As I was tightening the bottom left mounting bracket (the bolt goes into the radiator mounting bracket), with the torque wrench set at 35 ft-lbs (instructions for tip over bars say 30-40), of course, the aluminum engine block threads got
Step 2. Align the tap attached to the tap handle over the cross threaded or stripped hole. For right hand screws, insert tap into tap hole as you slowly rotate the tap handle clockwise. 99 percent of of holes, screws, and bolts are right hand screws. If you know your hole is a left hand thread, rotate counterclockwise instead of clockwise. Edit.

Oct 25, 2013 I think I'm going to tap it out to 7/16"-14. Major thread diameter for 3/8"-16 is .375". Tap drill size for 7/16"-14 is .406", so I'm only drilling out .030", realistically less than that because the hole is already larger from being stripped. Major diameter is .4375, so I'm really only increasing hole diameter by 1/16".

Sep 13, 2019 my issue is that the engine is to use ARP main cap studs which are to be torqued to 90ft/lb. one particular hole just continues to strip out before reaching the finish torque. first it stripped the aluminum threads in the block, then it stripped the helicoil, then pulled the BIGSERT out from the outside aluminum threads.
Jul 13, 2020 Here's to another exciting journey... My issue arose last summer in search of a boost leak which turned out to be a bad wastegate. I was also in process of installing a catch-can and Forge Diverter valve. Hoping to hold off replacing the turbo I continued with my install until a bolt went missing from the stock PCV valve. I was hoping that it didn't fall through the valve
Nov 19, 2015 Once the drilling is done you would probably be able to go in with a small awl and pick the threads out. At worst you may have to use a Heli-coil to repair it. I had a '62 Buick Special with a 215 Aluminum V8 and had to do this a few times. Just be sure you are drilling perpendicular to the mounting flange when you do it.

Sep 30, 2020 Over-torqued fasteners can stretch threads or even rip them out of a softer metal, such as an aluminum engine block. Mismatched Bolts and Holes : Using a fine-thread bolt in a coarse-thread hole or a metric bolt in an SAE hole can result in interference and stripped threads as the pieces try to conform to each other.
Jul 26, 2017 With the increase in the use of aluminum in engine blocks, there has been a significant increase in head bolt threads being pulled or stripped out. One of the best applications for this epoxy is fixing holes. If you have a stripped bolt or hole, turning to JB Weld products is a smart move to make. Threads do not always hold up under a lot of stress, use, or other tension-producing uses. They strip out fairly easily and when they do JB Weld can come to the rescue.

Apr 02, 2015 Small porosity leaks in aluminum can often be easily plugged with a single pin or tapered plug. Cracks in an aluminum head or block, on the other hand, are much more difficult to repair by pinning because aluminum is a softer metal than cast iron so the pins and plugs can't achieve as much “bite” as they do in an iron casting.
Basically drill it larger, tap it, thread in the new threaded sleeve for the bolt, thread in the bolt. Find the diameter timsert you need, and they'll have a kit that comes with a bit, tap and insert. I'll reassess the holes. They looked stripped and, using a small-gauge probe, they felt like most of the thread was gone.
Apr 17, 2018 The iron 4.8L and 5.3L blocks share a common bore at 3.78 inches. Next up in size is the original 5.7L (345ci) at 3.898. One advantage to the iron blocks is they enjoy a much greater wall thickness allowing larger overbores. The aluminum blocks are cast with a thin iron liner that restricts overbores to no more than 0.010-inch.

The soft nature of aluminum allows threads to pull from their base material when under the strain and pressure of an operating engine. When threads strip from connecting points of an aluminum head, new -- stronger -- threads need to be installed to ensure the heads remain securely attached to the engine block.

May 25, 2015 As the title suggests, my engine build has come to a screeching halt when the very last head bolt yanked the threads out of the block. Vehicle is a 2004 Honda Odyssey with 3.5L V6, all aluminum. The torque sequence on this cylinder head is 23-51-73 -- start at the lower value, torque each bolt twice, then move to the next, etc..
Dec 28, 2021 threads strip out of the block on some BMW M52TU and M54 engines. Typically, this occurs during the repair of an engine that has been overheated. The cause of the problem is due to an overheat condition that has weakened the structure of the aluminum block assembly in the area of the bolt threads.
May 20, 2014 As a general rule, thread lock on coiled thread repairs is a bad idea, you're likely to end up with the helicoil glued to the wrong thing and the whole lot impossible to take back apart. I have had some success with thread lock and solid thread repair inserts but it can still be tricky. 1. level 2. RealityRush.
