Mar 08, 2014 Lifter bore clearance!: I chased my poor oiling problem (at the rockers) on a freshly-machined/built 331 for months. One day I finally stumbled on a post about too much lifter-bore/lifter clearance, and I found a stock replacement lifter from Comp Cams that advertized it was .001" larger.

Depending on the manufacture lifters do very in size as we have seen engines come in with .0032 on lifter bore clearance and no problems, Its when you get up to .005 then we have seen oil pressure issues and we have had to bush the ...
Mar 14, 2017 That much clearance on an aluminum block lifter bore is probably a cause for concern but, I don't think that is the oil pressure problem you are seeing. Iron block main bearing clearances being used is a very big contributor to lower oil pressure; especially with a larger diameter main bore dimension.
Dec 28, 2007 lifter/lifter bore failures, it seems the lifters have welded themselves or otherwise hung up in the bores in iron blocks and wondered if the Al. blocks have the same issues. At this years PRI show I was surprised that the Dart, Brodix and Donovan Aluminum engine blocks didn't have bushed lifter bores as standard issue.
Dec 25, 2006 Press fit into block will be .001" - .0015" installed at room temp using a sleeve locking compound. Lifter body to sleeve clearance will be .0015" - .002". I haven't decided what size feed hole to use in the sleeve to meet the oil gallery. I may go with a .028" orifice to somewhat restrict oil feed to the upper end.
Oct 05, 2010 Most guys wont pay 700 dollars to have the lifter bores bushed. So far we are not seeing any issues with cast iron lifter bores and even our blower engines with .904 Jesel lifters and aluminum blocks with no bushings have gone for 11 years now no problems with wear. And those engines run 450 at the seat and 1250 over the nose With BBC cam cores.
NOTE: Due to variations in lifter sizes and clearance preference, most of our engine builder customers prefer the lifter bores sized on the small size of the specification. Sometime these bores will need to be lightly honed. The lifter bore spec is .8747”-.8757”. Most lifter manufacturers recommend .0015”-.002” clearance.

Installing Rebuilt Lifters: Do not wash in any solvent. Wipe the parts off with a lint free towel. Use 10W30 oil and lube the O.D. of the body and wheel. A-356 virgin aluminum is used to assure maximum potential for strength and repairability. 1/4" registers position the cast iron sleeves. The sleeves may be bored to 4.600.

Feb 23, 2017 The Dart LS Next block has notches at the bottom of the bores for rod bolt clearance. Our closest rod bolt head to block clearance was approximately 0.300-inch, so no additional block notching was required. Scat recommends the rod bolts be torqued to 64 ft.-lbs using ARP moly lube. Bolt stretch is not to exceed 0.0046-inch.

Jun 11, 2014 If you're simply hot-rodding an engine, there are advantages to a larger OD lifter of any design for a given cam, which is why some racers use Chrysler lifters (stock is 0.904") in Chevys (0.842") Fords (0.875"). Overboring lifters is routinely done in big race shops and can also correct stock lifter bore mistakes done during mfgr of a block.

How much lifter-to-bore clearance should I be running? For a cast iron or bronze bushed blocks, we recommend running +.002” clearance cold. If you are running your lifters in an aluminum block without bushings, we recommend running +.0012” clearance cold and preheating the block prior to startup.
