Apr 04, 2019 Actually an aluminum head AND block helps eliminate head gasket problems seen with aluminum heads on a cast iron block. The reverse is true too. Cast iron heads on an aluminum block were problematic as well. Gasket technology has improved as well. But to the original question, there is nothing to fear about a modern day aluminum engine block.
Jul 27, 2017 Most cast aluminum engine blocks are made from one of three alloys: 319, A356 or A357. The 319 alloy is 85.8% to 91.5% aluminum, 5.5% to 6.5% silicon, 3% to 4% copper, 0.35% nickel, 0.25% titanium, 0.5% manganese, 1% iron, 1% zinc and 0.1% magnesium. The alloy is given a T5 heat treatment to harden and strengthen the metal before the block is ...
4-Valve DOHC Engines: All 4.6 L 4-valve engines featured aluminum engine blocks with 6-bolt main bearing caps, with the only exception being the 2003–2004 SVT Cobra which had a 4-bolt main cast iron block. The 1999 and earlier engines featured an aluminum block cast in Italy by Fiat subsidiary Teksid S.p.A.
Answer (1 of 16): There can be a tremendous variation in the properties of any of the dozens of aluminum alloys and the many grades of cast iron. “Aluminum” and “cast iron” are not materials, but rather families of materials with a wide range of

The inline six-cylinder 2.8-liter engine is the biggest engine of the M52-series. The M52B28 was released in 1995 as a new engine for the E36 328i, E39 528i, and E38 728i models. The M52 engine series replaced the M50-series. This engine, like M50 engines, got an aluminum cylinder block with Nikasil layer on cylinder walls.
Dec 03, 2018 With active fuel management, the LH6 replaced the LM4 for 2005 and was the first of the Generation IV small block V-8 truck engines to go into full-scale production. This aluminum block design is a counterpart to the LY5 producing up to 300 hp with 330 ft-lbs. LH6 applications: 2005–2009 Chevrolet TrailBlazer including EXT (through 2006)
Jun 23, 2020 If an aluminum/iron engine overheats, the aluminum side will expand faster than the iron side, putting considerable stress on the head gasket (which mates the head to the block) and eventually causing it to fail. Since aluminum is softer than iron, severe overheating can also cause the aluminum to warp, resulting in permanent damage.
The design is the same on the 3.0L twin turbo engine. It simply appears less common since it's a less popular engine. Anyways, the problem originates with the oil pan RTV seal. It was a really poor design by Ford. A plastic oil pan bolting up to an aluminum block is a recipe for failures.

Race Engine. B21 ET engine (2,127 cc), 4 cylinder. FIA turbo factor was 1.4 placing it in the Under 3,000cc weight class. Volvo raced for outright honours. Power up to 257 kW or 345 hp (with water injection). 1986 RAS Sport engines produced up to 375 hp; Hardend block; R-Sport hardened M-rods
Weight: Iron engine blocks weigh more than aluminum engine blocks, which hurts fuel economy and performance. Easier to replace than to repair: Because iron engine blocks cost less, if one of the cylinders or components needs to be repaired, that can cost nearly as much as a replacement block.
Though the aluminum alloy also contain many similarities with low weight, it is still used in the manufacturing of diesel engine blocks because their internal stresses are higher. Grey cast iron contains 2.5 – 4 % of carbon, 1 -3 % of silicon, 0.2 - 1% manganese, 0.02 - 0.25 % of sulfur, and 0.02 - 1 % of phosphorus.

Jan 23, 2013 It ran beautiful. Then one day I loaned the car to my wife to go to work. She came home in a tow truck with a ruined engine. With the head removed I found a burned valve in cyl 4 and a slightly eroded piston in cyl 2. Both cyl 2 and 4 had zero compression. I bought new head bolts and tested the aluminum block for full torque. It passed the test.

The engine block however is another story. The block forms a lot of the mass and weight of the engine so using aluminium to build engine blocks reduces the weight of the engine by many kilograms and assists the vehicle in obtaining a better power to weight ratio and assists in achieving a front to rear weight ratio of 50:50 or close to it.
