Any input on this rod for welding aluminum I was told you can use a propane torch or O/A to weld with this rod. got a aluminum water tank and it's not important that it hold high pressure. or that the weld even looks good just needs to fix the seapage it has under about 10 psi was told this rod will work as good as tigging it.
Feb 11, 2010 paying big prices for these rods is a rip-off! If you have need for a strong repair of an aluminum item, I would stick with welding. May 11, 2010 Plus welding aluminum is a lot different that welding steel. Everytime I switch from welding steel to aluminum I take a couple of practice passes on scrap to make sure that I got the "feel" again since I don't do it that often. It took me a little bit to pick up welding aluminum too. Prolly just messing up cause it's dirty. JMO Later Josh.

Apr 19, 2010 Most portable welding services don't have a TIG setup on their trucks; besides, out in the open, the gas would be hard to keep contained and the weld would look like ****. I'd take it in to a shop, if I were you. That alumiweld sounds interesting, but it looks like glorified soldering to me. I don't think it's "true" welding.

Feb 13, 2008 I have a throttle control on my Ford tractor that is made of white metal (unknown type) that I have to fill in a hole so that it can be drilled and tapped. Has anyone ever used Alumiweld rods for a job like this? I have a Miller 210 welder but I have never done any aluminum work. Can I use my welder or should I braze with a torch and rods like Alumiweld?

As soon as the rod begins to melt, move the flame further away along the weld path or remove the flame and continue melting the rod on the metal being welded, bringing the torch back only as needed to keep melting the rod.
Feb 20, 2013 They are Zinc based rods that melt at 700* instead of 1200 for Al. I got some from True Value, marketed as Oxy-Acetylene Aluminum Welding rods. I'd hoped they'd be better than the Alumiweld and Duraweld stuff everyone hates. They're not. They don't stick to anything. They melt, ball up into spheres, and roll off whatever you were trying to repair.
Aluminum soldering/brazing vs steel welding. I have a couple of projects in the works and would like some advice before proceeding further. I'll be making some furniture related pieces and was originally planning on using 1/8 aluminum channels. I played around with those alumiweld rods and did totally fine with a butane torch on small pieces.

May 29, 2021 I ended up with globs of aluminum looking gum that I could flick off with my finger. LOL. One of the little tricks that I came across for getting a nice TIG weld is moving the TIG torch 1/3 the length of the puddle before you introduce your filler rod again. You will end up with some nice looking welds utilizing the 1/3-add-1/3-add.

Carbon and aluminum do not like each other. When welding aluminum, the metal has to be cleaned. A Tig or Mig welding process would be used with pure Argon as a sheilding gas.

A tig welder with aluminum rod might be the way to go. The size of the piece will determine how you move forward.
