The aluminum blocks save around 60+ lbs and pending on 2,3,or 4v will come in around high 300's low 400 lb range mustang_gtr_99

May 08, 2004 Based on the post below about the size of the 4.6L engine, does anyone have the true weight of the engine with an iron block? I understand that the new Lincoln Aviators have and all aluminum 4.6L that makes around 300hp, so I assume it is a 32V engine, any idea what the weight of the all aluminum engine is?

Apr 25, 2008 The Teskid Aluminim blocks (pre '01) are some of the best and strongest 4.6 blocks out there. They can handle upwards of 1200 HP with no issue. So to answer your question, yes, it is worth a 60-70 lb reduction when swapping to the Aluminum block, other than that, there is no real performance gain or difference between the blocks.

Nov 02, 2012 I agree. I also would have thought an all aluminum engine (LS-3) would amount to greater weight savings relative to an iron block engine (ZZ383). I intend to replace my existing 350 with an LS 3, and a significant consideration in selecting LS3 over (e.g.) ZZ383 was for reduced weight.

The power limit on the 4.6 engine can vary based on the production type and year of manufacture. On all 4.6 based engines though, the weak link is primarily the connecting rods. For 4.6 engines with 2 valve heads (2 valves per cylinder), the power limit is around 400 rwhp. This is for both NPI and PI models (1996-1998 and 1999-2004).
They still offer it as the 4.6L 2v option for trucks. I checked the ford website and its the old 4.6L 2v iron block (Al heads). The only other 4.6 in the line-up right now is the aluminum 3v and they are NOT using that for anything but Explorers and Mustangs. 16:16, 1
