Dec 01, 2012 The obvious advantage of the aluminum block is weight. Then you get added benefit -although rather insignificant- of it not rusting. As with most aftermarket blocks it also seems they are better than older OE blocks from an architecture standpoint, e.g. oiling. Cost is a huge con obviously since most are ~5k.

Sep 27, 2016 Car engine blocks are nearly exclusively aluminum these days; I can't think of a single example of an iron block, but there probably is. Pros for aluminum: Steel is 2.8X denser, so it's heavier than aluminum if the same volume of material is used. (See cons below) Thermal expansion matches the aluminum heads typically used, so less problematic ...
Dec 06, 2012 So say a 700 hp engine in a 600 lb (aluminum head/intake/WP) BBC. Thats 1.167 hp/lb) Take the same engine with an aluminum block, that would be maybe 660 hp with a 500 lb engine giving a much improved 1.32 hp/lb. While making less horsepower, the car should hook better, handle better, and should ET and trap better.

Nov 07, 2006 I think you'll find Aluminum big blocks vary from 110-130 lbs. while production BB Chevies are generally about 215 lbs. and Bowtie, Dart and Merlins go from 270-300 lbs. with most being around 270 lbs. at a 4.5" bore size. These are bare weights with the "Pro Merlins" with steel caps being the heaviest (300) and until recently maybe the strongest.

Jan 04, 2010 Option #3 repair the holes paint with rustoleum and deal with the flaws. Everyone keeps saying bedliner will add weight but a can is 7-10 ilbs max, and can of paint is about 5 ilbs is not a huge concern. Also has anyone gulvit the inside and then added bedliner to the inside. I would think that would make the boat beyond waterproof.
