I am using rust-o-leum spray on bed liner, with self etching primer. I know i did a crappy job scuffing up the piece, and i did not clean it with mineral spirits i used soap and water.
The only way to clean the aluminum is to break the bond "deoxidize" the aluminum. With the right chemical mixture, the aluminum can be simply wiped clean, pour a little on a rag and the gutter or dirty aluminum wipes perfectly clean. It's amazing!

Dec 18, 2012 Take it to a shop! I bought some 1/8 inch steel dimand plate some years ago to put on my trailer to replace the wood decking. I was able to have them cut it into strips 15 inches wide by 8 ft and then add a 1 inch 90 deg. bend along one edge. The bend was upward so it stuck up when placed on the trailer frame.

If you want to use a cleaner of some sort, test it on a small patch or corner to make sure it doesn't harm the metal.
