Sep 22, 2014 2XXX: Aluminum Copper Filler Alloys. The only 2XXX filler alloy readily available is 2319. This alloy contains copper (Cu), manganese (Mn), and titanium (Ti), and it was designed as a matching filler metal for the 2219 alloy. It is also used quite successfully for welding aluminum armor alloy 2519.
The main alloy ingredients of 6061 aluminum are magnesium and silicon. 6061 aluminum is heat treated and corrosion resistant. It is excellent for resisting moisture and is strong for it''s light weight. It is easy to drill, machine and saw. Chemistry Data : Aluminum : Balance. Chromium : 0.04 - 0.35. Copper : 0.15 - 0.4.
2.1 Aluminum/Silicon Alloys – 4xxx Series. The 4xxx series aluminum/silicon alloys are used predominately for filler alloys and are found as nonheat-treatable and heat-treatable alloys containing 4.5 to 13 percent silicon. Silicon in an aluminum filler/base alloy mixture of 0.5 to 2 percent produces a weld metal composition that is crack ...

Alloy 2219 has the best weldability and can be welded with heat treatable filler alloy 2319, as well as with the aluminum silicon filler alloys. Alloys 2014 and 2036 exhibit fair welding characteristics with these fillers, but their lower melting points and wider melting range make them more sensitive to hotshort cracking in the weld ...
Aug 25, 2020 Table 02 – Choosing filler rod for TIG Welding Aluminum. Whatever type of filler rod you choose, your filler rod must be clean and of high quality. If the rod is contaminated, its contamination can enter the weld pool and cause failure to your application. Contaminants on filler rod include oil, or a hydrated oxide.
See table below for recommended filler metals for various aluminum alloys. Maximum rate of deposition is obtained with filler wire or rod of the largest practical diameter while welding at the maximum practical welding current. Wire diameter best suited for a specific application depends upon the current that can be used to make the weld.
Apr 05, 2017 A quick overview of the different aluminum alloys reveals their different characteristics: 1XXX alloys. This class of alloy is the closest to pure aluminum. They are commonly employed to conduct electrical currents and for corrosion resistance. 1XXX alloys are easily weldable and are generally used with 1100 filler metal. 2XXX alloys.
A family of high-strength sheet and plate alloys. 5000 series aluminum alloys are readily welded with 5356 filler metal. However, with stronger alloys such as 5083, 5183, or 5556, filler metals should be used. 6000 alloys: 6000 series aluminum alloys are tricky to weld because they are prone to cracking.

I want to make sure we have a good seal. The framework is all 6061 and we have been using 5356 to weld. We were debating on using 4043 or 5356 to weld the plate butt welds on the bottom ...
Filler alloys for arc welding aluminum are evaluated against the following attributes: This image shows a GMAW (MIG) weld and microcracking that is the effect of the arc heating on 6061. Liquid penetrant testing can reveal cracks that are often not visible to the naked eye, but are present when 6061 is overheated by a welding arc.

Aluminum retains its toughness at very low temperatures, without becoming brittle like carbon steels. Aluminum is a good conductor of heat and electricity. When measured by equal cross-sectional area, electrical grade aluminum has conductivity which is approximately 62% of electrical grade annealed copper. However, when compared using equal ...
High-Strength 2024 Aluminum Rods and Discs. While 2024 aluminum was initially designed for structural components in aircraft, it's now widely used when a high strength-to-weight ratio is needed, such as for gears, shafts, and fasteners. It offers similar performance to 7075 aluminum, but it's not as strong.
Apr 08, 2020 A lot of people think that making their own filler rod by cutting thin strips from the base metal will give them the best match of chemistry. While this may work in some instances, it's crucial that you do not weld 6061 aluminum using 6061 as filler metal. This will result in a weld that cracks as it cools! 4. Keep the electrode close to the ...
4043 ALUMINUM WELDING WIRE ROD DESCRIPTION: 4043 is an aluminum/silicon filler metal designed for welding heat treatable base metals and is a common choice for welding 6061. 4043 offers good fluidity and less crack sensitivity than 5356 when welding 6000 series base metals. It is often used to for repair welding aluminum/silicon cast alloys such
Oct 11, 2018 Q: Which filler wire is best for welding 6061-T6 aluminum, 5356 or 4043? A: Both are acceptable for welding 6061-T6, but each has advantages and disadvantages depending on the application. An aluminum alloy containing 5 percent magnesium, 5356 generally is stronger and more ductile than 4043.

It's best to use a filler rod like the AL 4043 when welding together 3003 aluminum with alloys like 5052, 6062 and 6061. This aluminum grade can also be easily cold worked and has annealing capabilities, which should be done at 775 degrees Fahrenheit either during or after cold working. Afterward, air cooling should be allowed.

Aug 20, 2009 ER4043 is generally the preferred filler for 6061, the exception being when color match is required after anodizing. ER4043 will ALWAYS turn dark grey after anodizing ( due to the much higher Si content ) ER5356 is the next best choice and is readily available. No reason not to use ER5356 for your application.

Aug 24, 2020 Filler metal selection also plays a role in your bead profile and a weld's cosmetic appearance when welding aluminum. If you're TIG welding with a filler rod that is too small, for example, you may have trouble feeding enough filler metal into the weld puddle. Filler rod acts as a cooling agent to the puddle.
