Oct 03, 2006 Q: Which filler wire is best for welding 6061-T6 aluminum, 5356 or 4043? A: Both are acceptable for welding 6061-T6, but each has advantages and disadvantages depending on the application. An aluminum alloy containing 5 percent magnesium, 5356 generally is stronger and more ductile than 4043.

Q - I am looking for some assistance with the selection of the most suitable filler alloy for a particular GMAW welded aluminum structure. Application: Structural component used for material handling manufactured from 6061-T6 in material thicknesses of 1/8 to 1/2 inch. Joint Design: Fillet welds.
Jun 03, 2021 Aluminum grade 6061-T6 is welded using ER5356 ER4043. Both types are good for welding 6061 aluminum materials. 1. Filler ER4043 (TIG/MIG) – 4043 filler alloy, a 5% Silicon alloy, is often used to weld 6061 base materials, it is not commonly used when shear strength of the component is a predominant consideration.
Density: 2.70 g/cm³Sep 22, 2014 Second, in an equally important application, the 5XXX fillers, specifically 5356, often are used to weld the 6XXX base alloys such as 6061 and 6063 when mechanical property considerations are paramount. Finally, 5XXX fillers, again primarily 5356, should be used to weld 5XXX and 6XXX alloys when the weldment will be anodized after welding.

A family of high-strength sheet and plate alloys. 5000 series aluminum alloys are readily welded with 5356 filler metal. However, with stronger alloys such as 5083, 5183, or 5556, filler metals should be used. 6000 alloys: 6000 series aluminum alloys are tricky to weld because they are prone to cracking.
Base alloy 5083 can be successfully welded with filler alloys 5356, 5183, or 5556, any of these three filler alloys may be suitable for welding this base alloy. The reason to choose one of these filler alloys over the others is dependant on the application and service requirements of the component being welded.

Either filler is good unless you are anodising it then go for 5356. 4043 will be more ductile and less likely to crack but on the other hand 5356 is a stronger material but tends to crack if you don't cap the weld properly. Answer (1 of 4): Material of gear casing depends on your strength ,weight requirements and budget. If you have low budget then you can opt aluminium casting grades like LM24,LM4 etc. In casting, To avoid shrinkage and other defects you can give allowance in
Filler alloys for arc welding aluminum are evaluated against the following attributes: This image shows a GMAW (MIG) weld and microcracking that is the effect of the arc heating on 6061. Liquid penetrant testing can reveal cracks that are often not visible to the naked eye, but are present when 6061 is overheated by a welding arc.

Apr 08, 2020 A lot of people think that making their own filler rod by cutting thin strips from the base metal will give them the best match of chemistry. While this may work in some instances, it's crucial that you do not weld 6061 aluminum using 6061 as filler metal. This will result in a weld that cracks as it cools! 4. Dec 30, 2014 A: As you know, 4043 and 5356 are the most common aluminum filler alloys. In fact, these two alloys make up 80 percent of all aluminum welding wire sold. So it stands to reason that one of the two is the right choice for most applications.
Apr 28, 2009 As SundownIII stated, 4043 is fine for T-6. That is what I weld all my 6061-T6 with. According to "The Procedure Handbook of Arc Welding", 5356 is not one of the recommended fillers for A356. 4043 is the preferred filler. ER4047 may also be used. While this is what is recomended, I would bet that plenty of A356 has been welded with 5356.

It's best to use a filler rod like the AL 4043 when welding together 3003 aluminum with alloys like 5052, 6062 and 6061. This aluminum grade can also be easily cold worked and has annealing capabilities, which should be done at 775 degrees Fahrenheit either during or after cold working. Afterward, air cooling should be allowed.
