The Camaro and Corvette received aluminum cylinder heads, which helped increase performance. The LS1 received a massive upgrade to the cylinder block.
From a production standpoint, GM only built iron blocks with one exception – the 1969 ZL1 427 engine built for the Corvette and COPO Camaros. This was an exotic (for the time) all-aluminum engine and a major departure for GM. Today, the best place to find an aluminum block would be the aftermarket, like Dart.
