Jun 28, 2021 The 6xxx series of alloys, to which 6061-T6 belongs, is considered to have excellent corrosion resistance. Is 6061 T6 Machinable? Adding a T6 temper to 6061 aluminum in the O conditions improves its machinability from a D rating (poor) to a C rating (fair).
The first number in the code (ie. 6XXX) indicates that 6061 is in the 6000 series of aluminum. The next three numbers are unimportant, designating modifications and alloys within the series. The T6 denotes the temper of the material, in this case it is a solution heat treatment, followed by a quench, followed by an artificial age hardening process.
The purpose of this project is to determine if over-aging of aluminum causes the yield or tensile strength to fall below the minimum strength values set by the aluminum industry.
