Apr 04, 2019 Actually an aluminum head AND block helps eliminate head gasket problems seen with aluminum heads on a cast iron block. The reverse is true too. Cast iron heads on an aluminum block were problematic as well. Gasket technology has improved as well. But to the original question, there is nothing to fear about a modern day aluminum engine block.
Oct 15, 2008 I haven't worked in this area for years, but back in the 60s and 70s in UK, broaching was used a great deal for the typical 4 cylinder cast iron cylinder block and on bigger machines several blocks at a time could be surface broached, finishing completely the lower end (and sometimes sides) of the engine in one pass of a few seconds.

We used a set of 230 CC Dart Iron Eagles on the 386 with 64 Cc chambers and 2.08"-1.60" valves. We had 4.88's in the car then and I shifted at 7600 RPM's.
