Sep 27, 2011 I was in the process of installing front tip-over bars today on my old Concours. I've had these bars laying around since January. As I was tightening the bottom left mounting bracket (the bolt goes into the radiator mounting bracket), with the torque wrench set at 35 ft-lbs (instructions for tip over bars say 30-40), of course, the aluminum engine block threads got
Align the tap attached to the tap handle over the cross threaded or stripped hole. For right hand screws, insert tap into tap hole as you slowly rotate the tap handle clockwise. 99 percent of of holes, screws, and bolts are right hand screws. If you know your hole is a left hand thread, rotate counterclockwise instead of clockwise. One comment
Oct 11, 2004 Oct 11, 2004. #1. Attempting to install engine guards I stripped the threads (10mm?) in an engine mount threaded hole. Its either aluminum or magnesium. It's the most forward mounting bolt which connects a frame piece with the forward cylinder. There may be thread which was not reached with the bolt. It may be possible to drill and tap to a ...
Sep 30, 2020 Over-torqued fasteners can stretch threads or even rip them out of a softer metal, such as an aluminum engine block. Mismatched Bolts and Holes : Using a fine-thread bolt in a coarse-thread hole or a metric bolt in an SAE hole can result in interference and stripped threads as the pieces try to conform to each other.

Oct 25, 2013 I think I'm going to tap it out to 7/16"-14. Major thread diameter for 3/8"-16 is .375". Tap drill size for 7/16"-14 is .406", so I'm only drilling out .030", realistically less than that because the hole is already larger from being stripped. Major diameter is .4375, so I'm really only increasing hole diameter by 1/16".
Jul 26, 2017 With the increase in the use of aluminum in engine blocks, there has been a significant increase in head bolt threads being pulled or stripped out. There are many different styles of thread repair inserts available, but for something as critical as a headbolt, there are only three kits I recommend. 1. Lock N Stitch Full Torque Blind inserts
Jun 22, 2016 When installed into the larger repair threads, the wire forms a set of threads engineered to meet the original dimension of the stripped-out hole. The repair threads for the HeliCoil insert are made by using a Screw Thread Insert or S.T.I. tap. This is the same type of tap used for some other inserts.

Aluminum is used in machinery because of its light weight and low cost. Unfortunately, aluminum bolt holes are notoriously soft and easy to strip. You can fix a stripped aluminum bolt hole with a double-threaded insert that will allow you to reuse the original bolt.

May 25, 2015 As the title suggests, my engine build has come to a screeching halt when the very last head bolt yanked the threads out of the block. Vehicle is a 2004 Honda Odyssey with 3.5L V6, all aluminum. The torque sequence on this cylinder head is 23-51-73 -- start at the lower value, torque each bolt twice, then move to the next, etc..

Dec 16, 2013 While torquing the head bolts (m11x1.5) one stripped the threads in the block. Removed the head and discovered that the head bolts were only going 0.515" into the block, this doesn't sound like that is enough threads to for 60 lbs of torque plus 1/2 turn. Now the shallowest threaded hole in the block is 1.255" deep.

May 20, 2014 Stripped engine bolt threads on bike, can you repair with a helicoil? Also, should I use red loctite on the helicoil to secure it to the block, or is that a bad idea incase I need to remove it again? EDIT: To clarify, it's the threading in the bolt hole in the aluminium engine block that is stripped, not the steel bolt itself.
Basically drill it larger, tap it, thread in the new threaded sleeve for the bolt, thread in the bolt. Find the diameter timsert you need, and they'll have a kit that comes with a bit, tap and insert. I'll reassess the holes. They looked stripped and, using a small-gauge probe, they felt like most of the thread was gone.

These self-tapping screws are designed to keep thin metal from denting. To use self-tapping screws, place the screw directly on the aluminium sheet. The sharp point of the screw will make its own hole. Stabilize the screw so it doesn't tilt as it goes in. Let the screw turn until it goes all the way through.
Oct 30, 2006 The stripped thread is in the aluminum block. It is the hole that holds the lower front cylinder head stud. The stud would not take the 20 NM + 90 degrees + 90 degrees torque. So, the stud stripped its hole threads an came out with ~1/2" of aluminum clogging the end of its thread grip, leaving the upper ~1/2" of thread clean.

Oct 25, 2018 Summary: Best recommendation for aluminum oil pan thread repair kit.Aluminum oil pans are used on most BMW's (as well as many other brands) today to reduce the over-all vehicle weight. Dec 05, 2014 Jeff Smith: The good news is that you can repair this problem yourself with just a few simple hand tools and a ½-inch drill motor. There are several kits on the market for thread repair, but I've used the Heli-Coil kits in the past with good results. In the case of the small-block Chevy, the head bolt is 7/16-inch with 14 threads per inch.
Dec 28, 2021 threads strip out of the block on some BMW M52TU and M54 engines. Typically, this occurs during the repair of an engine that has been overheated. The soft nature of aluminum allows threads to pull from their base material when under the strain and pressure of an operating engine. When threads strip from connecting points of an aluminum head, new -- stronger -- threads need to be installed to ensure the heads remain securely attached to the engine block.
